State representative injured in May 9 car wreck
While driving back from the most recent legislative session in Montgomery, a local state representative was injured in a car wreck. On Thursday, May 9, a drunk driver was said to have struck three cars at the intersection of U.S. 431 and Alabama 21, including one occupied by Rep. Barbara Boyd, D-Anniston. According to Boyd’s son, Frank, she received internal injuries. Frank said others involved in the incidents were also injured but details are unknown.

Georgia RB Andrew Paul announces transfer destination
Georgia Bulldogs running back Andrew Paul entered the transfer portal after having an impressive spring with Georgia. Now, Paul has announced his plans to transfer to the Jacksonville State Gamecocks. Paul previously visited the Michigan Spartans on April 20, so it is a bit of a surprise that he opted to transfer to Jacksonville State. Paul should be set to receive a ton of carries are Jacksonville State. Paul put together a strong performance in Georgia’s spring game, recording four carries for 44 rushing yards. We projected Paul as Georgia’s No. 3 or No. 4 running back before he left the Bulldogs. Paul, a former three-star recruit, was expected to receive carries as part of Georgia’s running backs rotation. The Dallas, Texas, product accumulated 129 rushing yards and a touchdown on 29 carries in 2023. Paul missed the 2022 season with a torn ACL and is finally looking healthy. 247Sports ranks Andrew Paul as a three-star transfer. He is ranked as the No. 684 player in the transfer portal and the No. 62 running back.
Look Back ... to a favorable tax vote, 1949
May 18, 1949, in The Star: Voters in the city of Anniston yesterday renewed the special 5-mill property tax which is earmarked for school use by a favorable vote of more than six to one. Tabulations from boxes of six wards showed a total vote of 647 for passage of the renewal measure as opposed to 95 dissenting ballots. (Nearly 7,000 Annistonians are eligible to cast ballots.) Also this date: Four officials from the New York City Water System are visiting in Anniston for three days, during which time they hope to complete contracts amounting to almost half a million dollars with several of Anniston’s industrial plants. The men will be visiting Alabama Pipe Company, Rudisill Foundry, M&H Valve Co. and Lee Brothers Foundry during they time they’re in Anniston. They are at present guests of the Jefferson Davis Hotel.
Jax State picks up commitment from former Big 12, Big Ten defensive back
Jacksonville State picked up a transfer portal commitment Monday from Tee Denson, a defensive back who spent the last two seasons at Purdue. Denson, originally from Atlanta, also played two seasons at Kansas State. He did not see the field in the last two years at Purdue, missing all of 2022 due to injury.
Blackmon named to Jax State dean’s list
Joseph Jackson Blackmon of Greenville has been named to the Jacksonville State University dean’s list for his outstanding academic performance over the spring 2024 semester. Appointment to the list requires that students earn a 3.5-3.99 GPA (grade point average) while completing at least 12 credit hours of courses. Blackmon is majoring in criminal justice. The final day of AHSAA softball state championship tournament play includes a site change and modified schedule for Class 3A and Class 2A with the only eight teams left. Because of expected inclement weather, both classes will now begin play at 9 a.m. with Class 2A action at Jacksonville State’s Jana McGinnis Field while all Class 3A games will be played at Signature Stadium at Oxford’s Choccolocco Park.
