WASHTENAW COUNTY, MI -- Incumbent Washtenaw County Commissioner Justin Hodge faces two challengers from within the Democratic party in his bid to retain his District 5 seat. UM Professor to give talk in Maumee on political misinformation
Barbara McQuade, the former U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan and a current law professor at the University of Michigan, will talk about disinformation in American politics during a program at the Maumee Branch Library. Ms. McQuade’s recently published book, Attack from Within: How Disinformation is Sabotaging America, explores how authoritarian regimes throughout history have utilized disinformation to consolidate power and ways to combat the rise of these trends in the United States. The event, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, is hosted by the Maumee Branch Library in association with the UM alumni association.

Forty years on, future of contaminant plume under Ann Arbor still murky
Gelman Sciences LLC manufactured medical filters for decades, but that’s not the public health issue the company is known for. Dioxane from Gelman’s Scio Township plant leaked into Ann Arbor’s groundwater, creating a plume of contamination more than 4 miles long. That contamination was discovered by a University of Michigan graduate student, Dan Bicknell, who alerted the state environmental regulator on June 26, 1984.
