Since senior year is filled with college applications, spring is a popular time for high school juniors to plan college tours as they're trying to figure out where they want to spend their next four (or more) years after graduation. Visiting the places you're planning to apply — especially if they're far from home — is an important piece of the puzzle to make sure it's somewhere you'd be comfortable and happy, and while virtually every school will offer some kind of structured college visit, they don't always go as planned.

One prospective student was visiting the University of Massachusetts - Amherst this week when things didn't go quite the way she expected.

In a selfie-style video that a future student named Ashlynn shared on TikTok on Thursday, May 9, she can be seen sipping her coffee during her college tour (from Dunkin', obviously, because this is UMass) as someone off camera went on quite a rant.

"It's so unfortunate because I've had a generally good experience and people on this campus are wonderful, but you will not be safe here on this campus," the voice can be heard saying. "Do not apply here. I'm sorry I had to say this, but I can't in good conscience not tell you that this is the reality."

At that point, she got interrupted by someone asking her to leave. Awkward!

This is obviously not the ideal situation, but what happened to spark this kind of rant?

More About the UMass Tour Interruption

In a follow up video , the OP explained that it wasn't her tour guide who made this impassioned speech. It happened when they were visiting an art gallery on campus about an hour into their tour.

"This girl with brown hair ran in and everyone started looking her way. She started talking about how some issues happened in the last couple weeks at the school and how it was not safe there and no one should go," she said. "The video I took was taken halfway through her statement."

According to those in the comments who did know what was going on, it seems like the girl was referencing the recent protests at UMass, which is about 90 miles outside of Boston . Pro-Palestinian protesters have set up an encampment on campus, and multiple outlets have reported that, earlier this week, more than 100 students were arrested when they refused to take down the encampment.

Malia Cole, the organizer of the protest, claimed that students were "brutalized" by police in the process.

It sounds like an unsettling situation (to say the least) for everyone involved.
