Amherst Fire Chief Walter “Tim” Nelson announces retirement after over four decades of services

AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) – After more than forty years of dedicated service, Amherst Fire Chief Walter “Tim” Nelson has announced his retirement from the Town of Amherst, effective June 30, 2024.

Chief Nelson, who has led the Amherst Fire Department since 2009, leaves behind a legacy of unwavering commitment to public safety and community service.

Town Manager Paul Bockelman expressed deep appreciation for Chief Nelson’s leadership, stating, “Fire Chief Nelson has been a pillar of strength and integrity in our community for over a decade. His tireless dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of our residents has been exemplary.”

Chief Nelson’s journey in the fire service began in 1981 when he joined the Holyoke Fire Department as a young recruit. Reflecting on his early days, Chief Nelson shared a poignant memory from his formative years, highlighting the camaraderie and sense of duty that drew him to the profession.

During his tenure as Fire Chief, Chief Nelson prioritized modernization and innovation within the department. He secured additional staffing and funding for essential equipment upgrades, ensuring that the Amherst Fire Department remained at the forefront of emergency response capabilities.

Moreover, Chief Nelson’s commitment extended beyond firefighting duties. He actively participated in community initiatives, serving on boards and lending his expertise to non-profit organizations. Notably, Chief Nelson played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Department of Community Responders for Equity, Safety, and Service (CRESS), a groundbreaking initiative aimed at enhancing public safety and inclusivity.

Lynn Griesemer, President of the Amherst Town Council, praised Chief Nelson’s contributions, stating, “Chief Nelson has been an invaluable asset to our town, embodying the values of dedication, compassion, and professionalism. His leadership has set a high standard for excellence in public service.”
