Sign Man: A Fan’s Unmatched Legacy
A chapter of UMass history ended this spring. As I sat courtside at the Mullins Center’s assigned media table during a Massachusetts men’s basketball game in November, an usher approached me and asked if I wrote for the Daily Collegian. He happened to be a Collegian alum, and he had a story for me; “Do you know the Sign Man?” he asked. “Did you know he’s retiring?”
Around the Herd: April 17 to April 23 in Athletics
Over the past weekend, the Amherst baseball team went to Vermont for three games against NESCAC rival, Middlebury College. The Mammoths fell early in the first game, giving up a run in the first inning. Jack Sampedro ’25’s RBI-single down right field answered the score in the third, but the Panthers struck right back to make the score 2-1 at the top of the sixth. From then on, the Mammoths didn’t let them score again, scoring three unanswered runs in the seventh and eight innings, with one of them coming from yet another Sampedro RBI. Amherst won 4-2 for Coach J.P. Pyne’s 300th career victory.

The University of Massachusetts softball team split the doubleheader against its conference rival Rhode Island Rams on Wednesday afternoon. The Minutewomen (13-31, 9-11 Atlantic 10) went back and forth with the Rams (13-33, 8-12 A-10) throughout both games, as both results came down to the last few innings. Late-game execution was the name of the game as the pitching staff for both Rhode Island and UMass gave up costly plays in the late innings that put each game away.
