ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The Albuquerque Coin Club is the biggest coin club within 400 miles and has over 200 members. The club supports numismatic education for the public and its members.

Former club president Phil Vitale talked Thursday about fractional currency. During the Civil War many people began to hoard silver and gold coins. This caused a stress on day-to-day commerce and was a stress on the exchange of goods and services. To combat this the government began to issue fractional currency notes in 1862. These notes came in 5, 10, 25 and 50 cent denominations; they were referred to as fractional currency.
