Lenawee County assault victim dies, with alleged attacker already in custody
Murder charges will be pursued against a 37-year-old man already facing two assault counts for a May 13 attack on a Lenawee County man who died Sunday from his serious head injuries, the Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office said Monday. Based on a name and description provided by the wife of victim Jerry Fike, 81, deputies and a Michigan State Police trooper arrested Kevin Michael Turski as he walked along a road near the Fike residence in the 4000 block of Yankee Road on the day of the assault, the sheriff’s office said. Mr. Fike, who suffered serious head injuries and was found lying on the ground and unresponsive near his house, died in a Toledo-area hospital Sunday and the Lucas County Coroner’s Office ruled the death a homicide Monday after an autopsy was performed. The sheriff’s office said an open murder charge will be sought as a result. “The [Fike] family knew Turski but he was not welcome at the residence,” the sheriff’s statement said.
United Way of Monroe/Lenawee Counties: Health Checks, golf outing keep May busy
This past month has been a busy month for the United Way: three Health Check events and one golf outing! First, the Health Checks … Our volunteer team and interagency partners have helped us to host Health Checks in Adrian, Temperance (Bedford) and Dundee. We had a record 137 attendees in Adrian, 103 in Bedford and nearly 100 in Dundee. We’re a little tired but thrilled at the numbers. Many attendees have come to rely on the $20 blood panel testing as a low-cost alternative for their comprehensive blood work. I, too, try to get my blood work completed at a spring and fall Health Check, respectively. (It beats a $200+ co-pay, even with insurance coverage). Talking to the attendees made me further realize how important affordable health care is to all of us. And a program like Health Check is so needed and necessary.

Milan's original Saline River Bridge was demolished in 1936
MILAN — The original Saline River Bridge in Milan was a fixture in the city in the late 1800s. It was also a rare example of a pin-connect Pratt truss "tressel" bridge of which few examples exist anywhere in the U.S. today. The “Murals for Milan” beautification project features a photo of the original Saline River Bridge in the downtown area on Wabash Street and shows the bridge as it appeared (facing north) in 1900.

Women's investment club celebrates 30th anniversary
In 2020, Stacy DelVerne of Sylvania joined an investment club to learn about the stock market. She initially invested $200 and has since put in $20 to $50 a month. She has picked up friends among the fellow club members and a working knowledge of the stock market over the past four years — all while coming into some money in the process, she said. That’s because of a steady 30 percent return on investment that the After Ours Women’s Investment Club has enjoyed over the past few years, said Marcia Grandsko, the club president. The club turned 30 this month. Ms. DelVerne said she joined the club because she also has personal investments she needs to manage.
