UPDATE: Robbery suspect killed during officer-involved shooting at Abilene store

ABILENE, Texas ( KTAB/KRBC ) – A robbery suspect was killed during an officer-involved shooting at an Abilene store Monday afternoon.

The incident happened at United on N Willis Street around 2:00 p.m.

UPDATE – 5:00 P.M.

In a press release , the Abilene Police Department (APD) said officers were called out to the United Supermarket at North 10th and Willis streets at around 2:00 p.m. Upon their arrival, store employees allegedly told police that a man was threatening them and customers with “a bladed weapon.” A cashier also told police the man demanded money from the register.

This suspect eventually left the store and employees locked the doors to prevent him from reentering. Officers found the man outside of the store, holding the weapon.

The release reads in part:

“ The subject did not comply with multiple commands from officers to surrender his weapon. An officer deployed a Taser, but it did not have an effect on the male. Officers fired on the suspect, striking him .”

Shortly after, the man was pronounced dead. As per APD policy, two of the officers involved will be placed on paid administrative leave.

The situation is now being investigated by the Department of Public Safety Texas Rangers.

Police will not release the deceased suspect’s name until his family can be notified.

Abilene police say the suspect robbed the store then ran out into the parking lot, where he got into an altercation with officers.

During the altercation, police say he pulled a knife, prompting officers to open fire.

This suspect, who has not been publicly identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.
