Man arrested at checkpoint with over 130g of drugs and hidden gun
KINSTON, Lenoir County — A NC Highway checkpoint uncovers psilocybin mushrooms that led to the arrest of a Greenville man. Kinston law enforcement came in contact with Christopher Smith, 34 of Greenville during a driver's license checking station on Highway 11 on Tuesday, April 30 close to midnight. Officers searched the vehicle after observing drug violations and found a concealed handgun, more than 60 grams of psilocybin mushrooms and more than 70 grams of marijuana.

NOTICE FOR CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES IN PRIVATE/PARENTALLY-PLACED and HOME-SCHOOLS. A meeting will be held on May 28, 2024 from 3:30 pm – 4:30 p.m. at Jones County Board of Education, 320 West Jones Street Trenton, NC 28585. The purpose of this meeting is to consult with private schools and parents of parentally placed private school students as well as home-schooled students. We will discuss students with disabilities, their needs and location in order to decide which students will receive services, what services will be provided, how and where the services will be provided, and how the services will be evaluated. With the annual BBQ Fest on the Neuse just around the corner, anticipation and excitement are at an all-time high as organizers prepare for what promises to be the biggest festival yet. Tammy Kelly, a board member of the festival committee, expressed enthusiasm about this year's event, noting, "I’m excited. I think the excitement is bigger than it's ever been leading up to the festival." This sentiment is echoed by Waylon Adams, the festival's Board Chair, who shared, "Biggest festival ever with a huge crowd expected both Friday and Saturday, and awesome weather predicted.”
Pedestrian struck after vehicle swerves off road to avoid animal
KINSTON, Lenoir County — A Dover man was transported to the hospital after being struck by a vehicle on Sunday, April 28. Kinston officers responded to a call of a pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle on the 1900 block of Towerhill Road around 11:15 p.m. Officers say the pedestrian identified as a 50-year-old Dover man was transported to ECU Health Medical Center for his injuries. An investigation shows the driver Anthony Belcher, 50 of Snow Hill swerved off the roadway to avoid an animal and hit the pedestrian who was walking outside of the roadway.

Pedestrian killed in hit and run in Winterville
A Grifton man was hit and killed by a driver who then left the scene on Monday on N.C. 11 near Davenport Farm Road, the Winterville Police Department reported. Marquez Outlaw, 32, of Grifton, was located by officers about 9:20 p.m., the department said. The time of the crash is unknown. At this time information is limited but the vehicle could be a Ford, the department said. Kinston High School - Javiar Grady
BIOGRAPHY: My name is Javiar Grady, and I am a senior at Kinston High School. I am the son of Donisha Grady and Javier Murrell. I grew up in Kinston for most of my life, but I spent a short part of my adolescent years in Fayetteville, North Carolina. I attended Northeast Elementary School for the majority of my elementary education and Children Village Academy from 5th grade to 8th grade. Since entering Kinston High as a Freshman, I have been involved in the Gospel Choir and Drama Club. I am also a member of the School Improvement team, and the Honors Society, and I serve as an Americorp Tutor in a math class. Additionally, I am part of the Marching Band, where I held the title of Brass Captain last year and currently serve as a senior Assistant Drum Major. In my free time, I am actively involved in church, particularly working within the music ministry. My plans include graduating from a 4-year university with a major in Elementary Education to pursue a career as an elementary teacher. Later on, I aspire to obtain my master’s degree in Administrative Leadership to become a Principal.
