Firefighters help install smoke alarms at residences in Alpena
ALPENA, Mich., (WPNB/WGTU) -- The Alpena Fire Department and the American Red Cross will collaborate later this week to install smoke alarms at area residences. Between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 2, firefighters will "install free smoke alarms on Alpena’s northside in the vicinity of Lincoln Elementary," the fire department said in a news release.
TC Central hosts Alpena for baseball and softball doubleheaders
TRAVERSE CITY -- It was a busy day at the Trojan Athletic Complex as Traverse City Central hosted Big North Conference rival Alpena in baseball and softball. The Lady Trojans dominated in the first game of their softball dual winning 14-0 and had a bigtime comeback to win the second game 7-6.

Members of the VFW post #2496 in Alpena, drove around town to spread awareness about the dangers of the agent orange compound. “We’re doing research for agent orange, so we’re collecting money for all the research and help that’s going out and see if they can get a cure for this nasty disease” said Steve Lawver, an agent orange rider.

Alpena MI – Today was mostly sunny and mild, daytime highs were in the 50s. This weekend temperatures will be much warmer with showers and storms. We are in the slight risk for severe weather for Saturday. Tonight clouds will increase with showers developing with overnight lows in the 40s. Tomorrow will be mostly cloudy with showers & thunderstorms in the area; some storms could be strong and because of that we are under a slight risk of severe weather.
Rogers approves sale of 1.31 acres of city-owned property
The Rogers City Council has approved a $550,000 purchase agreement for the sale of 1.31 acres of city-owned property at 136th Avenue and Rogers Drive to Java Companies. A memo to the council from Rogers Community Development Director Brett Angell said the proposed buyer plans to develop a multi-tenant commercial building that would feature a quick service restaurant, coffee shop with a drive-thru, and one additional office-related tenant. The property, originally acquired via TIF1 (tax increment financing) funds in 2006, currently is undeveloped and maintained by the city, according to the memo. The site is bounded by Maynard’s restaurant on the west, a bank and multi-tenant commercial building on the north, a multi-tenant commercial building and movie theater on the east, and a drainage pond on the south.
One dead, three injured in I-75 construction zone crash
Springfield Twp. — On April 13, the Michigan State Police Detroit Regional Communication Center was notified of a minor four car hit and run crash that occurred in the left lane of Northbound I-75 South of the East Holly Road bridge. The section of highway is currently a construction zone.
Viking softballers split with Soo, drop two to Alpena
