Motorcycle Passenger Dies After Motorcycle Crashes Into Pickup on M-55
Roscommon County Sheriff’s Office deputies said a passenger of a motorcycle died May 27 when the bike hit a pickup truck that failed to yield. Deputies said they were sent to the crash at M-55 and Loxley Road in Roscommon Township, Houghton Lake on Saturday. Deputies arrived and found that a GMC Sierra pickup and a Honda motorcycle had crashed. Preliminary investigation shows that the pickup, driven by a 38-year-old man from Houghton Lake, attempted to cross M-55 traveling south on Loxley Road and failed to yield to the motorcycle, which was traveling west on M-55, deputies said. The vehicles crashed, causing injuries to the driver of the motorcycle - a 48-year-old man from Midland - and the pickup driver, while the passenger of the motorcycle, Frederick Hammond, 49, of Midland, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Home Lost but Man Saved In Early Morning Roscommon Co. Fire
Roscommon County deputies say they were able to save a sleeping man from a fire early Tuesday morning. They responded to reports of a fire in the Village of Roscommon a little after 1 a.m. on Tuesday. The home on North Fifth Street was already significantly burned on the backside when they arrived. Deputies found a man sleeping inside the home. They were able to wake him up and get him out just before a propane tank exploded and another caught fire. Firefighters arrived and fought the flames for several hours. The home was lost, but the fire was contained without spreading to any buildings nearby.
Board votes no on resolution opposing military land use MOU
Commissioners opt not to oppose recent DNR, Department of Military and Veterans Affairs Memorandum of Understanding. The Crawford County Board of Commissioners voted on Thursday not to approve a resolution opposing the Memorandum of Understanding between the Department of Natural Resources and the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs allowing the military “to conduct exercises on up to 52,000 acres of eligible land” via “limited land use permits.”

Gaylord man arrested for assault with intent to murder
OTSEGO COUNTY, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU) -- The Otsego County Sheriff's Office says they have arrested a 35 year-old Gaylord man for assault with intent to murder. Deputies were first alerted in the early morning hours on May 27th when they were called to Otsego Memorial Hospital for an assault complaint. There they met a man who they say had been severely beaten and sustained several injuries. The Sheriff's Office has not identified the injured man or said if he knows the suspect.

Frederic Man Dies in Motorcycle Crash
Michigan State Police say a man was killed in a motorcycle crash in Crawford County on May 26. Troopers say a motorcycle with a sidecar was traveling south on Hiawatha Drive near north Manistee River Road in Frederic Township. The driver, 62-year-old Guy Russel from Frederic, was seen swerving in the roadway, before running off into a ditch near his home. He was ejected from the motorcycle, and later died from his injuries at Munson Hospital in Traverse City.

Multiple departments contain 80 acre forest fire near US-131
NORTHERN MICHIGAN (WPBN/WGTU) -- Michigan State Police confirm an 80 acre forest fire has been contained. The fire spread near US-131 off County Line Road. Multiple fire departments from Grand Traverse, Wexford and Roscommon counties worked to contain the fire. According to the Fife Lake Springfield Fire Department, DNR planes took water from nearby Fife Lake to douse the flames.
