Alpena Community College held its 70th commencement ceremony Thursday, May 9th in Park Arena. “We had a record crowd, and park arena was absolutely packed. And the overflow room, Granum theater was packed as well, where we live streamed. We had it was just a wonderful night. We had a jumbotron so people could see, the sound was good. Ethusiasm, it’s just, it’s just a great night, you know?” said Don MacMaster, President of Alpena Community College.

Two Contractors Battle Out the Bid at Alpena City Council Meeting
In the last city council meeting, tensions were running high as two local contractors were bidding on the same street project in Alpena. “There is some local roadwork that will be starting soon. Near downtown, it will be our Second Avenue project and that’s goes from Fletcher to Hueber Street. And that is a project that’s been long coming. It’s water and sewer, street curb lines, drainage, everything. It’s a big project. It affects a lot of people, but it’s been spent needed for quite some time.” Alpena City Engineer, Stephen Shultz said.

Here in Beautiful Alpena, it may be hard to believe that there is a drug issue. “Our area is not unique, and it is not different than the rest of the state of Michigan or the United States; we have a significant problem with drugs,” Lieutenant Stuart Sharp of the Michigan State Police said. In just this last year, forty-six million Americans have experienced a substance abuse disorder. “The misuse of narcotics impacts our community as a whole, stretches the resources of DHHS, Catholic Human Services, our local hospital and law enforcement,” said Sharp.

United Way of Alpena Receives Grant From Consumers Energy Foundation To Help With Food Insecurity
United Way of Northeast Michigan received a $4,000 grant from the Consumers Energy foundation. “In every year we partnered with Consumers Energy foundation, and they’ve supported activities that we have in our community. Two years ago, they gave us, a grant of $750. SO that allowed us to expand the Dolly Parton Imagination library into Presque Isle County. And then the last two years, they’ve increased that grant to help meet basic needs in our community” said Joe Gentry, Executive Director, United Way of Northeast Michigan.
