Lieutenant Stuart Sharpe of the Huron Undercover Narcotics Team discusses the drug problems in Alpena. Here in Beautiful Alpena, it may be hard to believe that there is a drug issue. “Our area is not unique, and it is not different than the rest of the state of Michigan or the United States; we have a significant problem with drugs,” Lieutenant Stuart Sharp of the Michigan State Police said. In just this last year, forty-six million Americans have experienced a substance abuse disorder. “The misuse of narcotics impacts our community as a whole, stretches the resources of DHHS, Catholic Human Services, our local hospital and law enforcement,” said Sharp.

Nature’s Kingdom Conservation Rehabs Orphaned and Injured Wildlife To Release Back Into The Wild
Nature’s Kingdom Conservation in Herron, is dedicated to rehabilitating orphaned and injured wildlife and releasing them back into the wild. “We just did a release on two little bunnies. They were actually brought in at two different times. Both of their nests were disturbed by dogs and the other siblings killed. And so, then we got to rehabilitate them back. I just kept them like two extra weeks, and actually, they wouldn’t take a bottle because their eyes were already open. So I offered them dishes of milk and then, pellets and different greens and we just nursed them back to health and let them go” said Michelle Sobek, Owner of Nature’s Kingdom Conservation.
Habitat for Humanity Northeast Michigan to Build Fifty Affordable Houses in Hillman Village
In Hillman Village, some working-class families have a bright future as major housing developer, Habitat for Humanity, projects fifty new homes built in the next five years. “Currently, we have a major project, a five-year strategic plan. We have Habitat for Humanity, Northeast Michigan joined with the village of Hillman to develop nineteen and a half acres into affordable housing. We’re talking as much as 50 to 60 homes over the next five years,” Executive Director for Habitat for Humanity Northeast Michigan, Ted Fines Said.
Alpena Downtown Development Authority Awards Grants to Local Businesses
Big changes are coming to the downtown area. The Alpena Downtown Development Authority has awarded over $200,000 in grants to five businesses in the downtown area for facade transformation. The DDA received a $400,000 grant from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation to contribute to facade renovations throughout the downtown district. These changes to the downtown Alpena area will bring in more revenue and make the aesthetic of the area look even more beautiful than it already does.
Sunrise Mission and Rebel Roots Hair Studio Provided Free Haircuts To Alpena Residents.
Sunrise Mission offered free haircuts and beard trimmings to residents of the Alpena community. “We have five hairstylists that are professional and very experienced that are coming in to offer haircuts and beard cuts, to various members of the community, including some of our residents” said Michelle Bailey, Executive Director of Sunrise Mission.
ACC Concrete Tech Students Put Their Skills To The Test In A Concrete Canoe Race
Students from the Alpena Community College concrete tech program, built and raced canoes they built out of concrete in the Northern Lights Arena pond. “It actually comes out of the American Society of Civil Engineers, they do concrete canoe races and so, we kind of implement it into our precast, prestress concrete” said Eric Kennedy, instructor of Alpena Community College, concrete tech program.

The Put Your Town On The Map grants have been awarded to Imlay City with a $25,000 grant for their public interactive art and audio display. Rogers City secures second place with $15,000 for a captivating public art sculpture. St. Johns claims third place with $10,000 for community artistic benches. These projects aim to enhance community spirit while showcasing the creativity and innovation of Michigan's small towns. The Alpena Senior Citizens Center and Compassus Hospice Conducted A Dementia Tour Simulation
Compassus Hospice helped the Alpena Senior Citizens Center put together a Dementia tour simulation. “So today, we’re doing what we call the virtual Dementia tour. It is an evidence based, program where people actually get to experience what it might be like if they had Dementia. And we do that by garbing people up with different things that affect their different senses” said Teri Rapp, a Hospice liaison at Compassus Hospice.
