Vt. trooper receiving TBI rehab following I-89 crash
MONTEPLIER, Vt. (WCAX) - A Vermont State Trooper injured in an I-89 crash in March is being treated for severe traumatic brain injury. Corporal Eric Vitali, a 19-year VSP veteran, was on his way to a first-aid training in Waterbury the morning of March 8 when he crashed into the back of a Bethel Volunteer Fire Department tanker truck that was responding to another crash just north of the Bethel exit.
Police ID victim in St. Johnsbury shooting
ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. (WCAX) - Police on Wednesday released the name of the man who they say died in a drug-related shooting at a St. Johnsbury apartment Monday night. The Vermont State Police say Matthew Lomasney, 47, of St. Johnsbury, died of gunshot wounds to the torso. They say Lomasney went to an upstairs apartment around 11 p,m, wearing a mask, and forced his way in. Police say someone inside the apartment shot him and that Lomasney then retreated, falling down the stairs.
Underhill homeowner charged by bear
UNDERHILL, Vt. (WCAX) - Officials in the town of Underhill are warning residents after they say a local resident was repeatedly charged by a bear on Pleasant Valley Road. Underhill Animal Control Officer Jennifer Silpe-Katz says the bear tried to attack a man while he was in his yard. She says he was able to defend himself from multiple charges by using a stick and shouting as he retreated into his home. Even then, she says the bear continued to try and attack the house and get inside.
Child hit by school bus in Waterbury
WATERBURY, Vt. (WCAX) - A child in Waterbury was sent to the hospital Wednesday morning after being hit by a school bus. It happened on Blush Hill Road just after 8 a.m. Vermont State Police say the 77-year-old driver was slowing down to make a stop when a 12-year-old ran in front and was hit. Police say the bus was going about 5 mph at the time of the accident.

JEFFERSONVILLE — A Waterville man was arrested early Wednesday morning after allegedly breaking into a local construction business, state police said. Troopers responded to a burglary report at GW Tatro Construction at approximately 5:56 a.m. where they found evidence of forced entry, with damage to the property and several items missing, including company tee shirts and a winter jacket.
Thunder Road driver working to become first woman to win rookie of the year
BARRE, Vt. — It's only been four years since Taylor Hoar first got behind the wheel of her own racecar, but quickly she's gained a following as a trailblazer in the sport. Hoar is going to be the first woman in over a decade to race in Thunder Road's late model division. Previously, Hoar raced in the street stock division.
