A wife has revealed how she watched in horror as a tornado destroyed her home with her husband inside – and blew her dog ‘through the air’.

Julie Jorgensen had been driving her 4x4 vehicle towards her home near Yutan, Nebraska when a dangerous funnel cloud made landfall nearby on Friday. She had been urged by her husband Dana Jorgensen in a phone call to get back to their address so they could both seek shelter as the storm approached.

But just as she got within a few hundred yards of the home, she looked on in terror as the massive twister barreled into the property and destroyed it within seconds. Julie told 6 News WOWT : “I was scared for him because I knew he was in the house, and I watched it hit the house. And I could have videotaped it, and I got my phone up, but I was shaking so bad, I couldn’t figure out how to use my phone.”

The home was left wrecked by the tornado - with photos showing how the walls were crushed and the windows smashed by the force of the scary weather phenomena. Luckily, Dana revealed how he had managed to seek refuge in a tiny "crawl space" just moments before it struck the building and wiped it out.

He told the channel: “[I was] scared, really scared. It was like a vacuum — the noise and wind, and then things hitting the house — and then the suction on my ears. And within about 30 seconds, it was gone.”

Julie said that their rural home, which will now need to be completely rebuilt from the ground up, had previously stood for almost 50 years. The Jorgensen's also feared the tornado had swept up their beloved dog Jet.

"She might have blown through the air — we don’t know, we don’t know," the shocked couple said. Despite the devastating loss of their home, the couple's tragic day ended with a happy moment - when they were reunited with Jet.

The dog was found a quarter of a mile away when someone spotted her running through a field. Around 120 homes suffered damage as the massive storm hit neighboring Iowa, with four people in the state also requiring medical attention after suffering injuries.

Meteorologists from the National Weather Service fear that the dangerous high winds and rain that hit Nebraska and Iowa could now threaten homeowners in several more states, from Michigan to Texas. Roughly 18 million people are at risk of flooding and hazardous weather conditions throughout Saturday and Sunday - with the service warning of "very large hail, damaging winds" and possible further tornadoes.
