Yuma City Council to vote on wastewater local limits changes

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - On Tuesday night, the Yuma City Council will approved wastewater local limits that industrial users can discharge into the sewer system.

They approved the update following approvals already in place by the state and the water sewer commission.

"Well it’s extremely important to make sure we’re staying current on all the regulations coming out of the state for our waste water discharge and so tonight was a critical part to make sure that we are, that’s one of those things that lets us to contiue grow as a community," said Mayor Doug Nicholls.

What this means is, it will limit what local industrial users can discharge into the sewer system.

The last time the limit was updated was over three years ago, and the minor changes are to zinc and total nitrogen limits.

Christopher Grant, the Water Quality and Compliance Manager, explains how it works.

"Our goal is to make sure that there's no pollutants that pass through the wastewater plant, so we want to make sure we know what's coming up to the front porch, front door to the wastewater plant, and make sure that we have the capacity to treat that," Grant said.

The changes are set to take place within the next month.
