Man charged with punching, strangling woman in car

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — A city man is expected to be arraigned Wednesday in municipal court on charges he punched and strangled a woman Monday evening while they were riding in a car on the East Side.

Raymond Gordon, 36, is charged with domestic violence, a fourth-degree felony; strangulation, a fifth-degree felony; and misdemeanor counts of resisting arrest and obstructing official business.

Gordon has been in the Mahoning County jail since his arrest about 9:05 p.m. Monday.

Reports said police were called to a fight between a man and a woman in the 2400 block of Atkinson Avenue and when they arrived, they found a car parked in the middle of the street and a man, later identified as Gordon, and a woman walking in the street away from the car.

Reports said the woman told police Gordon attacked her and when police tried to detain him, he resisted to the point where he had to be taken to the ground. He would not free his hands to be handcuffed until he was stunned, reports said.

Gordon also refused to get into a cruiser and had to be stunned again, reports said.

The woman told police she and Gordon were driving in her car when the two started arguing and he hit her in the face and then started choking her, reports said.

The woman stopped the car and got out to try and get away from Gordon, but he ran after her, grabbed her by the hair and started dragging her on the ground before police arrived, reports said.

Reports said the woman had swelling on her face and around one of her eyes.
