YAKIMA, Wash. — Yakima’s Camp Hope is one step closer to breaking ground on what's been called a game-changing onsite behavioral health center in partnership with Comprehensive Healthcare.

Camp Hope Director Mike Kay said changeover at the city stalled progress on the project, but it’s gaining momentum again.

By the end of the month, Kay said the city will have sectioned off a small part of the existing land at Camp Hope where the center will be to create a new parcel.

Kay said the lot line adjustment is necessary in order for Comprehensive Healthcare to receive funding dedicated to the project by the state. He said as soon as that happens, they'll be able to break ground on the project.

The center itself will be made out of repurposed shipping containers and will provide room for full-time staff to provide therapy and case management services. The project also includes modified shipping containers that will provide additional beds for the shelter.

Kay said the center will also eventually contain a clinic where residents can obtain medical services. However, he said that aspect of the center won't open until the new parcel the city is creating can be rezoned.

"Once we get that one little, small piece of their property rezoned, then it will allow us to operate the medical clinic that's there on the property," Kay said.

Kay said the goal is to have the behavioral health center up and running by November 2025.
