If the state and the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) had done what former Governor Holcomb announced in 2021 to start improvements on existing US 231 through Dubois and Martin County, we would already be experiencing the benefit of passing lanes and improved intersections. When first announced, $75 million was to be allocated to these improvements. Even if the cost doubled to $150 million, it is a fraction of the projected $3.4+ billion Mid-States Corridor.

State Road 57 Near Newberry Closing for Bridge Work

Beginning on or around Monday, November 2, crews will close S.R. 57 near Newberry. This closure will occur over the White River. The road closure was originally postponed to allow for local farm harvest traffic to complete for the season. The closure on S.R. 57 will allow a bridge deck overlay project. Work is expected to last through the end of November, depending on the weather. The official detour for this project is State Road 58 to State Road 67 to State Road 54. Consolidated Rail Corp. (Conrail) has appointed John Wright president and chief operating officer, effective immediately. He succeeds Brian Gorton, who retired. Over the past decade, Wright served as the general manager of Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad (IHB), a switching service provider jointly owned by Conrail and CPKC. He will now oversee Conrail’s operations, strategic growth, safety innovations and infrastructure enhancements. Wright started his rail career in 1996 as a conductor for Norfolk Southern Railway. Before joining IHB in 2017, he held multiple executive positions at CSX.

NWI RDA Issues RFQ for Engineering Services for US 12 Scenic Byway Study

The Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority (RDA) invites qualified firms or teams to submit statements of qualifications to provide transportation, civil, and multimodal engineering services for the US 12 Scenic Byway Technical Study, to be completed by December 1, 2027. The selected engineering consultant will join an RDA-led consultant team preparing a coordinated regional framework for U.S. 12 in Lake and Porter Counties that advances lakefront access, tourism, safety, mobility, environmental stewardship, and corridor revitalization across Northwest Indiana. The study will implement the vision and recommendations of the RDA Comprehensive Strategic Plan by producing a Corridor Management Plan, an Indiana Dunes State Park Access Study, and a prioritized implementation program. The work will support an Indiana Byway Program application, position the corridor for a potential future National Scenic Byway nomination, and prepare high-priority projects for grant and capital funding, a news release said. Average gasoline prices in Indiana have fallen 19.4 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.80/g today, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 3,271 stations in Indiana. Prices in Indiana are 3.9 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand 91.1 cents per gallon higher than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has decreased 5.9 cents compared to a week ago and stands at $6.281 per gallon.
