Fundraisers have been set up for Woodstock residents who were recently displaced due to an apartment fire.
On April 28, a fire broke out at Brooke Mill Apartments, displacing residents of 34 units, according to Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services.
No injuries among residents were reported, but one firefighter sustained minor injuries from a collapse.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Several GoFundMe pages have since been set up for families who have lost not only their home, but also their belongings.
One of these fundraisers was set up by a Reyna Murphy manager at a local Publix, who works with some of the residents.
“A devastating fire left three of our own without a home and their personal belongings. Elisabeth and her family have been with Publix for over 20 years. They are a second family to many and are valued citizens in our community,” a message on the GoFundMe reads in part. “They need basic necessities, housing, furniture, food, clothes. Please donate any amount to help them rebuild their life. Any donation is greatly appreciated for this loving family.”
As of Wednesday afternoon, the fundraiser had raised over $20,000 for the family.
In an update on the page, a family member thanked donors for their support.
“My family and I are in awe of how quickly this community got together to help us during this time! We love each and every one of you so much!” the message reads in part.
Another fundraiser has been set up by Isabelle Syracuse on behalf of another family, including a teenage son, who lost everything to the fire.
“Please help Juan and his family get through the next few weeks and re-start their life,” a message on the GoFundMe reads in part. “These are good folks put in an extremely tough situation. Yes, they have renters’ insurance, but it will take some time to come through. Thank you for any donation you can manage, anything helps.”
As of Wednesday afternoon, the fundraiser had raised almost $9,000.
Another fundraiser has been set up by a woman whose son and granddaughter were displaced by the apartment fire.
“Thankfully David and Eva got out safely with just the clothes they were wearing and their two cats.. David is a single dad with full custody of his 11-year daughter. Everything they own is gone,” Joanne Salomone wrote on the page. “He does have renters’ insurance, but it will reimburse a fraction of the cost it will take to rebuild their lives. In addition, the apartment complex only has a few vacancies so it is unclear where he will live, as a single father money is already tight, and he can really use financial help to move forward and rebuild. No donation is too small. Thank you in advance for considering helping.”
