WOODSTOCK, Conn. (WTNH) — Two suspects police say were involved in a lengthy standoff Wednesday in Woodstock appeared in front of a judge on Thursday.

Reuben Field, 39, and 37-year-old Mark Racine made their first appearances in court after the standoff shut down the neighborhood surrounding a Woodstock Road home.

“There was actually snipers on the front lawn, our front lawn,” said a neighbor who did not want to be identified.

He said he called police when he saw a strange car pull up to the nearby house just before noon on Wednesday.

“So, I looked at the car, saw the car pull in the driveway,” he said. “Two guys get out and they had baseball bats.”

He said the suspects then climbed into a window of the second-floor apartment, where police say they found the woman who rents the apartment asleep with a man.

According to court papers, the renter later told police she awoke to find Racine carrying a “baseball bat” and Field with a “military-looking gun.” She believes they had been looking for her roommate, who wasn’t home.

She then said they “all ‘smoked crack’ together.”

In court, Field asked to be moved to a substance abuse program.

Field surrendered to police a few hours into the standoff, while Racine was seen jumping out a window and running toward trees just after 7:30 p.m. He was then arrested.

It wasn’t until 1:00 a.m. that police went into the home, where they found a fake gun the woman said Field was carrying.

BACKGROUND: 2 arrested after hours-long standoff in Woodstock, Conn.

The home invasion charges against both suspects were dropped, but conspiracy to commit burglary with a deadly weapon charges were added. Both suspects were ordered held on $100,000 bond and are due back in court next month.

They were ordered to stay away from the Woodstock home, from the woman who rents it, the roommate, and two other people.
