When most people picture a national park, they think of sprawling mountain ranges, towering forests or miles of untouched wilderness. Thirty years ago, New Bedford became home to a different kind of national park, one right in the heart of downtown. Instead of mountains and forests, New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park spans 13 city blocks, woven into the streets, historic buildings and waterfront that helped make the city one of the most important whaling ports in the world. Established on Nov. 12, 1996, the park is now celebrating three decades of preserving New Bedford's history and sharing the stories of the people who helped shape the city. Over the years, its mission has grown well beyond whaling, shining a light on the people, cultures, industries and events that made New Bedford the city it is today. "Celebrating 30 years is a significant milestone for New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park," said Laurel A. Racine, the park's superintendent.
