525 acres near Auburn could be protected forever. Here's what Placer County would pay

A 525-acre property northwest of Auburn could soon be permanently protected from housing development, expanding a large network of open space across western Placer County. The Placer County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to approve draft agreements to preserve the property, known as Harvego Bear River Preserve Phase 2. The land is near the Auburn Valley Country Club community and adjoins other protected land. The property is mostly covered by blue oak woodlands and used for cattle grazing. It has also been considered for housing development and could accommodate about 128 homes under current zoning. The proposed conservation easement would permanently prohibit development while protecting wildlife habitat, oak trees and ranching activities. If the deal is completed, the property would help connect more than 7,000 acres of protected land and grazing areas between the Bear River, Raccoon Creek and Hidden Falls Regional Park. “Preserving these beautiful oak woodlands is about safeguarding our natural heritage, supporting healthy ecosystems and ensuring future generations can enjoy the same extraordinary landscapes that we get to enjoy today,” Board of Supervisors chair Shanti Landon said. Sacramento Mayor Kevin McCarty will outline his priorities for the city’s future during his second State of the City address Thursday morning at the Crocker Art Museum. The event could offer a preview of major city initiatives and priorities for the coming year. Unlike traditional State of the City addresses, the event will feature a question-and-answer session with a yet-to-be-announced interviewer. Potential topics include homelessness, economic development and a projected $40 million city budget deficit. Facing a $66.2 million budget shortfall in 2026, the city avoided widespread layoffs by eliminating vacant positions, raising fees and cutting homelessness spending. Many of the cuts produced ongoing savings, but the city must increase revenue or make additional cuts to balance future budgets. Addressing homelessness was a central promise of McCarty’s 2024 mayoral campaign. Early Elk Grove election results: Robles and Parks face off in 4th District

Elk Grove City Councilmember Sergio Robles led challenger Peggy Parks in early election night returns Tuesday as he sought a second term representing the city’s 4th District. As of 8:01 p.m., Robles had 65% of votes tallied, compared with 35% for Parks, according to unofficial Sacramento County election results . The initial results reflected ballots mailed before Election Day, with more votes left to be counted. Robles, 33, was first elected in 2022 and previously served on the city’s Planning Commission. A member of the California Army National Guard, he emphasized housing affordability, support for small businesses and programs helping first-time homebuyers. Parks, 58, a community volunteer, emphasized homelessness, traffic safety and improving city infrastructure. She also wanted to expand safety education about electric bicycles and hold regular office hours to hear from residents. Both candidates identified housing and community services as priorities , although they proposed different approaches to addressing the city’s needs.
