WINTERVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – On Wednesday, students from W.H. Robinson and A.G. Cox walked, biked and scootered as part of Walk and Roll to School Day.

At the event, ECU Health passed out helmets to students who needed them. Participating students also wore bright yellow wristbands to help cars and motorists see them. There were also parents, teachers and community members chaperoning the students on their way to class.

“Unfortunately, the leading cause of death for youth in North Carolina for kids under 12 is motor vehicles,” Safe Routes to School Winterville Coordinator Dr. Katherine Dale said. “The importance of days like this is teaching kids how to walk and bike safely on streets and roads and using sidewalks, but also facilitating active mobility in a shared chaperone group setting.”
