Man pleads guilty to obstruction
A Ladysmith man accused of resisting or obstructing an officer after his brother allegedly led a Rice Lake police officer on a high-speed chase through the city pleaded guilty to the charge on Thursday in Barron County Circuit Court. Jacob J. Shimko, 38, appeared before Judge J.M. Bitney and pleaded guilty to misdemeanor resisting or obstructing an officer. Two felony counts of bail jumping were dismissed but read into the record. Bitney ordered Shimko to pay court costs and he was given 60 days to pay or set up a payment plan. An arrest warrant had been ordered for Shimko as he had not appeared on May 8 as scheduled. It was never issued as the defendant appeared in court the next day.
Michalski, Esterholm win at conference meet
There were some banner performances at the Marawood Conference Track and Field Meet on May 13 in Abbotsford. Chequamegon senior Autumn Michalski won all three of her distance runs, while Phillips senior Gavin Esterholm won both of the distance runs he competed in. On a sunny day with a cold wind, the Hayward Hurricanes track and field teams hosted their only home meet of the season Thursday, May 9. The Hurricane boys placed first out of five teams and the Hurricane girls took second out of five teams. Fishing Has No Boundaries event launches on the Chip
The Hayward Chapter of Fishing Has No Boundaries (FHNB) will host their 37th annual fishing event for anglers with disabilities Friday and Saturday May 17-18 on the Chippewa Flowage, with headquarters at Lake Chippewa Campground. This year’s event has 72 participants, who will be assisted by 67 volunteers, 58 guides and 45 attendants/guests. They will go fishing aboard 32 watercraft. Iron Range, Minn.- A summer lunch program is in need of volunteers. The annual Meet Up and Chow Down program put on by the United Way of Northeastern Minnesota is set to return on June 3. The program provides free lunches during the summer months to area students. Meals are available every weekday except Fridays at locations across the range. Volunteers are needed in Biwabik, Chisholm, Cook, Hibbing, Hoyt Lakes, Keewatin, Nashwauk, and Virginia.

County W to undergo ditching on Tuesday
The Price County Highway Department will begin ditching at various locations on County Highway W on Tuesday, May 14, according to a press release. The work will start at Birch Hill Road, and end 12 miles west at Forest Lane in the town of Elk. County Highway W will be reduced to one lane in the work zone from 6:30 a.m. until the work is completed, which is estimated to be around 3:30 p.m.

Phillips and Chequamegon high schools each celebrated track and field accomplishments at the Rhinelander Invitational on May 9. Chequamegon senior Autumn Michalski was a triple winner of the 800, 1,600, and 3,200 run events, and Phillips senior Hayden Sokolowski won the 110 and 300 meter hurdles to highlight just two star athletes on the day. Tanner Johnson of Hayward has been named the outstanding senior graduate of the University of Arizona-Tucson’s College of Geosciences in May, 2024.
