WINSTON-SALEM — The body of a Winston-Salem man missing since October was found last week in Stokes County, according to the Winston-Salem Police Department.

The remains of Zackary Voshall New were discovered April 24 in the area of Middleton Loop. authorities said.

Another man, Jerry Jonas Caudill, was charged with his murder in December, despite no body being recovered at that time.

New had been reported missing on Oct. 23 and evidence suggested that the disappearance was not voluntary, according to the police.

“Further investigation revealed that Mr. New was murdered on Sept. 17, 2023,” the statement read. “On Nov. 30, CID detectives took warrants out on Jerry Jonas Caudill for firearm by felon and concealed remains of a human body having reasonable grounds to believe that the death occurred from unnatural causes (NCGS 14-401.22(e)).”

Caudill turned himself in on Dec. 13, and was arrested and also charged with felony murder, according to the statement.

“This is a sad day for our victim’s family as it confirms the death of a loved one. We do hope that we are able to provide some sort of closure and justice to the family.” Jim O’Neill, Forsyth County district attorney, said in a statement.

“We worked closely alongside the Forsyth County District Attorney’s Office to gather new evidence/insight in terms of the location of remains. Stokes County Sheriff’s Office also graciously assisted us since it was in their jurisdiction,” said Annie Sims, Winston-Salem Police Department public information officer.

The investigation remains active and ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Winston-Salem Police Department at 336-773-7700 or anonymously through Text-A-Tip at 336-276-1717.
