WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WGHP) — The man who shot a passenger in his car, paralyzing him, will spend up to two decades behind bars, according to the Forsyth County District Attorney’s Office.

On Monday, Davon Rashard Carter, 31, pleaded guilty to attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, discharging a firearm within an enclosure to incite fear, possession of a firearm by a felon and being a habitual felon.

He was sentenced to 190 to 240 months in prison, which is about 15 to 20 years.

The victim, a man, told investigators that Carter had offered to drive him to an appointment.

On Dec. 6, 2021, Carter drove about a quarter-mile before shooting the victim twice “in broad daylight.” Carter then pushed the victim out of his car. A witness was able to corroborate the victim’s account.

Winston-Salem police responded to the shooting and found a victim, who was unarmed, lying motionless in the middle of the 2100 block of East 10th Street . He had been shot in his leg and spine.

Officers tied a tourniquet around his leg, and he was rushed to a hospital.

“Tragically, given the severity of the gunshot wound to his spine, [the victim] is paralyzed from the waist down,” the district attorney’s office said.
