From my New York loft, my heart leapt with joy when South Africa filed a petition with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to condemn the high death toll of Palestinians. Later, many Caribbean countries lent their support. While I was overjoyed, it dawned on me that these countries have powerful UN seats and political power that they never used to help Black Americans or themselves. The Irony is Black Americans used the Congressional Black Caucus, protests, and widespread boycotting to end apartheid. Caribbeans have benefitted from Civil Rights, immigration policies, HBCUs, and scholarships developed by Black Americans. Stranger still, many of the victims of violence and police brutality are in fact, Africans and Caribbeans.

It was not a declining or aging congregation or financial matters. Victory church has ceased to exist because the pastor has been accused of s$x crimes against a minor and now faces six additional charges.

The Denver City Council awarded The Salvation Army another $8 million contract Monday to run the Tamarac Family Shelter for people experiencing homelessness. Council members Shontel Lewis and Flor Alvidrez voted against the contract. Lewis said while the Salvation Army has made some “long overdue” promises, nothing in the contract holds them accountable to data-driven metrics. “We can’t just throw money around to solve a problem.” She added the city needs to “bake into every contract” data expectations that will be used to hold the agency accountable. She said outcomes ought to be evaluated by using “accurate, easy to understand information.”
