Piney Grove builds 50 beds
The sounds of saws, sanders and drills replaced nature’s vocals last Saturday when the Piney Grove Baptist Church’s parking lot was transformed into a sea of bunk bed builders. The Build a Bed project was sponsored by the Serendipity Sunday School Class, along with Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP). The build attracted over 100 volunteers to construct 50 beds in one day. EC, Edenton, Hertford must pay electric supplier for higher costs
Elizabeth City is going to have to pay its electric supplier almost $2.1 million over the next two years because of higher-that-anticipated energy costs in 2022. Edenton and Hertford also must pay the N.C. Eastern Municipal Power Agency $715,020 and $168,139, respectively, because of those added costs. That’s because NCEMPA, which is the electric supplier for the three municipalities, has an agreement with Duke Energy Progress to “true-up” the cost...

Continuing inflation has had an effect on numerous nonprofit programs across the county and the state. Individuals heading these organizations all have the same concern. One local nonprofit facing a possible pause or extinction is the Youth Bertie Back Pack Program. The program provides a weekend food supply for students facing food insecurities. For nine years the program has helped to fill the stomachs of Bertie County’s school-aged children who...
Williamston mayor working on taskforce
While Martin General Hospital remains shuttered, there have been few updates on its future. The Martin County Board of Commissioners say they are working behind the scenes to find a new hospital provider, but have offered little in the way of a plan if the hospital does not re-open. In Williamston, plans are underway to form a Health and Wellness Foundation to deal with the immediate and future health needs...
