The First Responders’ Dinner is one of the more rewarding events of the year for the Windsor/Bertie Chamber of Commerce, and certainly the highlight of the month of April.

We invite — or attempt to invite — all of the first responders in Bertie County to a barbecue chicken dinner provided by the Chamber.

Our primary sponsor as always is ECU Health Bertie Hospital with some help from Bertie County and the town of Windsor. The hospital also provides volunteers to help serve and clean up which is much appreciated.

The event has a very limited program and music traditionally provided by Mixin Mike. It is just good to see our deputies, police officers, ambulance drivers, N.C. Forestry Service members and others all together in sharing a communal as we express our thanks to them. We look forward to doing it again next year.

This year we have had some movement of our Windsor Riverfest, which last year was in June, this supposed to move to May, but actually winds up on the first Saturday in August (Aug. 3).

We work with the Partnership of the Sounds and numerous state agencies to bring a quality event to Windsor with music, food, information, adult beverages and other vendors. Circumstances this year dictated that this event move to August and we will see how it goes on that date for future events.

Destination by Design, which has been working with the county for the last year on tourism promotion, is planning a reveal of a new logo and promotional ideas at the Windsor Riverfest.

We look forward to what they will be presenting to the public at that time. They are working with the county through a grant and have done some impressive work so far as they are trying to establish a blueprint for us to follow that is developed just for Bertie County and its municipalities.

We are excited in Windsor about Royal Farms coming to the by-pass, as we add another quality convenience store to our area. They should be opening in about a month.

The Chamber is also excited about the possibility of bringing Dr. John Bream’s medical practice to Windsor through our incubator program on Granville Street. Dr. Bream offers an old-school style medical practice and is similar to some urgent care facilities in other counties in our area, which will provide more access for our citizens for medical care on a same day basis.

On Granville Street, we also have the placement of two electric charging stations which are across from the mural on the side of the License Plate Agency. The location was chosen as a central downtown spot, so individuals charging their electric vehicles could visit our downtown stores, restaurants and parks while in Windsor.

The funding for these electric charging stations was provided by a grant that the town of Windsor received through the Volkswagen Clean Air Civil Settlement.

Over in King Street, a new event space is being developed by the Bertie Arts Council with some help from the town of Windsor. Artisans Alley is already taking shape in the alley next to Tommy Davis Insurance and where former Mayor James F. Hoggard’s office is located.

Look for benches and lights to be added to alleys which already boast the newest mural in Windsor. Look for the first event to be held in the alley to be the World Music Day on Friday on June 21, also presented by the Bertie Arts Council.

We are looking forward to a fun and eventful summer at the Chamber and look to see you at one of the upcoming events including Freedom Fireworks on July 3 at the Roanoke/Cashie River Center.
