OPINION: Fix city term limits, vote yes on Measures 3-608 and 3-609

As a conscientious voter, it can be difficult to vote for change. I often think, if it’s not broke why fix it?

We need to fix our term limits in Wilsonville by voting yes for measures 3-608 and 3-609. These measures fix our city’s term limits and allow our city councilors and mayor to effectively serve and lead our strong city.

First, Measure 3-608 clearly corrects bad math. One day does not equal an entire four-year term. A City Council seat with less than 365 days in its term should absolutely not be counted as a full term. For people to truly invest in serving our city they will want to know their appointment is not short lived. Those appointed with more than one year remaining in their City Council term will definitely be counted as serving their full terms.

Second, Measure 3-609 separates the term limits for our mayor and city councilors. Currently these term limits are grouped together, if the same person serves in both roles. We know the mayor and city councilors have distinct and important jobs. Representing us at the national and state level, the mayor works hard to better our city’s quality of life while securing funds for vital improvements. We need our mayors to serve two terms in order to effectively lead Wilsonville.

Please join me in supporting Measures 3-608 and 3-609. Learn more at voteyesyes.org.
