Former Democratic state representative unseats NC Senate incumbent

A Democratic challenger unseated his Republican opponent Tuesday in one of the most competitive state Senate races. James Gailliard, a pastor and former state lawmaker, defeated Lisa Barnes, who was seeking her fourth term in Senate District 11, with all 51 precincts reporting unofficial results. The district encompasses Franklin, Nash and Vance counties. Gailliard posted to social media that he is “deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve.” “It is a true honor to be able to represent our communities in Raleigh, and it is a responsibility I do not take lightly,” he said. “Let’s get to work!” Gailliard, a pastor at Word Tabernacle Church in Rocky Mount who served two terms in the state House, campaigned on reforming criminal justice, increasing access to broadband in rural areas and decreasing unemployment. Barnes, a former Nash County commissioner who served one term in the House, advocated for cutting taxes, increasing access to healthcare and uplifting the agricultural community throughout her campaign. She has worked in agribusiness alongside her husband, Johnny Barnes, who owned one of the country’s largest sweet potato producers. He died last year. Nash County is joining Operation Green Light

The Nash County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution Monday supporting Operation Green Light for Veterans, a national initiative that recognizes military veterans and raises awareness of the challenges many face after returning to civilian life. The resolution was presented by Nash County Veterans Services Director Anthony Rogers, who urged the county to join communities across the nation in showing support for veterans and their families. Operation Green Light, an initiative of the National Association of Counties and the National Association of County Veteran Service Officers, encourages residents, businesses and local governments to display green lights in the week leading up to Veterans Day. The display from Nov. 4 through Nov. 11 is a visible symbol of gratitude and support for those who have served in the armed forces. The resolution cites the sacrifices made by military personnel, the stress many service members experience during the transition to civilian life and the continuing role veterans play in their communities through civic organizations, public service and volunteer work. Annual Ride of Honor returns for fourth year to celebrate veterans

The 2026 Ride of Honor slated for today is set to feature numerous motorcyclists taking a route from Flying Iron Harley-Davidson off North Winstead Avenue into the Nash County countryside and through small towns before returning to the motorcycle dealership. The motorcycle ride is going to be the fourth such event. The purpose is to celebrate veterans and to help raise funds for nonprofit veterans-focused initiatives in Nash County. Mary Ann Knarr-Avery, the founder of the event, said she is pleased with how the ride has grown through the years. “I’ll tell you, when we started out, we only had a few people helping put this together,” Knarr-Avery said. Now, Knarr-Avery said, “We have an amazing team of people,” including ambassadors, a group of alumni and community leaders providing support. “And so, I see us continuing to grow,” Knarr-Avery said. “Every year, it’s a little bit better.” Knarr-Avery also noted that the Ride of Honor has grown to include what is called Project Built for Honor. Project Built for Honor resulted in what Knarr-Avery said is an approaching completion of transforming, in stages, the interior of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2057 off N.C. 97 southwest of Rocky Mount.

Democratic challenger defeats one-term DA in a landslide victory

An overwhelming majority of voters in Edgecombe, Nash and Wilson counties cast ballots to replace first-term incumbent District Attorney Jeff Marsigli with Democratic challenger Rena Spellman. Four years ago, Marsigli, a Republican, defeated longtime incumbent Democrat Robert Evans by 79 votes in a hard-hitting contest, but unofficial results on Tuesday showed that this year’s contest between Marsigli and Spellman was a big win for the Democrat. Spellman in the three counties in the 8th District combined received 49,878 votes (slightly more than 57.2%) to Marsigli’s 37,271 (nearly 42.8%), according to unofficial vote tallies. That is a 12,607-vote difference. Spellman was victorious in all three counties, with her most narrow win coming in Nash County where she received 21,697 votes (slightly more than 53.5%) to Marsigli’s 18,824 votes (nearly 46.5%). In Wilson County, Spellman received 16,112 votes (nearly 56%) to Marsigli’s 12,689 votes (slightly more than 44%). And in long-historically pro-Democratic Edgecombe County, Spellman received 12,069 votes (67.7%) to Marsigli’s 5,758 votes (32.3%). All vote tallies are unofficial until canvassing. Neither Spellman nor Marsigli could be reached for comment. However, in phone interviews last month with both candidates, the topic of discussion centered around experience.
