    Bruins’ Pender top triple jump seed in 2-A championships

    Out of the 17 entries from the Times readership area in the NCHSAA 2-A track and field championships Friday in Greensboro, only Beddingfield High senior Asun Pender is a regional champion.

    Pender is the top seed in the boys triple jump after winning the 2-A East Regional last week at Kinston with a top leap of 46 feet, 1 inch. He will also is the regional long jump winner and enters the state 2-A meet on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University as the No. 5 seed out of 15 with a winning regional leap of 22-0.75.

    Pender will have some company in the triple jump as teammate Ivy Dawson, who was third in the regional with a 42-3.5, comes in as the No. 9 seed. Greene Central sophomore Dietrich Williams, who qualified in the long jump, triple jump and high jump, is the No. 7 seed in triple jump at 42-7.5. Williams has the 10th-best seed distance in the long jump at 21-4.75 and is tied for third in high jump at 6-4.

    The top seed in the long jump belongs to Bartlett Yancey senior Jaylen Neal at 23-4 while Randleman’s Chase Farlow has a 6-8 high jump that sets the standard.

    The third member of the Beddingfield contingent, senior Nolan Gamwell, was the 2-A East runner-up in the 1,600-meter run with a time 4:38.84. That ranks seventh out of 16 winners with Seaforth junior Jack Anstrom as the top seed at 4:31.47.

    Brian Jones has the best seed out of five entries from North Johnston as the junior ranks fourth in the boys 400 dash in 49.99 seconds after finishing second to Northeastern senior Dwan Bell in the 2-A East Regional. Jones is also on the 4×400 relay for North Johnston.

    Panthers senior Mudian Mustafa is eighth in the boys 800 seed times at 2:02.89 while junior Haley Epps is 15th in the girls 3,200 at 13:36.08. Junior Samantha Boswell ranks seventh in girls discus with a seed toss of 103-6.

    Besides Williams, Greene Central has four more athletes entered in the state 2-A meet. Senior Marshaylah Sutton comes in as the No. 5 seed in girls shot put at 34-9.5 while junior Annysha Wooten is tied for 12th in the girls discus seeding at 95-7. Rams junior Jaylen Chavez brings a 131-9 seed toss to boys discus while sophomore Kameron Vandiford’s 22.22 time in the 200 has him in the first preliminary heat.

    SouthWest Edgecombe has just its boys 4×400 relay that ranks seventh out of 16 entries with a regional time of 3:31.47. The Cougars foursome is junior Tijhir Brown, senior Diontez Townsend, junior Jah’son Vick and senior Braxton Warrick. Freshman Devion Mayo is the alternate.
