Woman charged in fatal Forest Hills Road crash

A woman faces a criminal charge after the victim in an April traffic crash succumbed to her injuries.

Tanishia Anquane Barnes-Fleming, 35, of Wilson, is charged with one count of misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, according to a release from Sgt. Eric McInerny, public information officer with the Wilson Police Department.

Police responded to the 3000 block of Forest Hills Road after a crash was reported at 5:19 p.m. April 30. Investigating officers determined that two passenger vehicles were involved.

“One of the drivers, Judy Pearson Nguyen, 65, of Wilson, was transported to East Carolina University Health Medical Center in serious condition,” McInerny said. “The driver of the other vehicle, Barnes-Fleming, was transported to Wilson Medical Center with minor injuries.”

McInerny said officers were notified May 9 that Nguyen had died from her wounds.

Police obtained an arrest warrant on the misdemeanor death by motor vehicle charge. Barnes-Fleming turned herself in and was released on a $2,000 unsecured bond.

McInerny said the wreck is still under investigation.

Barnes-Fleming is also charged with failure to reduce speed and failure to wear a seat belt in the crash.

According to a wreck report prepared by the Wilson Police Department, Nguyen was in a 2013 Toyota that ran out of gas in the right lane when Barnes-Fleming, driving a 2004 Saturn, rear-ended the stopped vehicle at 50 mph.
