Those who drive down Greenville Loop Road in Wilmington have likely noticed a burned house near Greenville Loop Seafood.

According to a reader, the home, which sits back from the road behind a fence, burned several years ago. The reader asked the StarNews about the status of the property and how the city was handling it.

    Here's what we found out.

Is the city working to address the issue?

According to a status update provided to the StarNews by Jerod Patterson, spokesman for the city of Wilmington, city staff has been working on the case since May 2022.

What's the status of the home?

City staff held a housing code hearing for the property in June 2023. At the hearing, an order to demolish was issued. According to staff, the owner of the home is deceased, and the city has been working with the heirs to "resolve the situation."

The property is pending demolition funded by the heirs, according to staff. A demolition permit has been issued. City staff had been in contact with the demolition company, and equipment was supposed to be delivered to the site by mid-May.
