Region News Team meteorologist Matt Wintz says the record high for October 12th is 85 according to records kept at the Porter County Regional Airport in Valparaiso, and the Region could break or tie that record. Another day with highs in the 80s is in the forecast for Tuesday October 13 2026. The National Weather Service Chicago says the record high temperature in Valparaiso was set in 2008, while in Chicago, the record high for today’s date is 84 also set in 2008.

COLUMBUS, OH — The northern lights may be visible across Indiana and Ohio Thursday night into Friday morning if the space weather forecast holds. A G2, or moderate, geomagnetic storm is possible as a couple of coronal mass ejections interact with Earth. While this event is not as strong as some previous displays, viewing conditions are expected to be nearly perfect. Clear skies and minimal moonlight will also set up a great night for the Draconid meteor shower and planet viewing.

CHICAGO, IL — Thursday will be cooler than Wednesday across the Chicago area, with highs in the upper 60s to low 70s. Attention then turns to a fairly strong warm front lifting into the region Friday afternoon.
