Rep. Scott Dyk, R-Williston, resigned from the state Legislature on Sunday, according to an email he sent to legislative leadership.

“ Unfortunately, family health issues impede further service,” Dyk wrote in the email.

Dyk represented District 23, near Williston, in the state House since 2023. He served on the interim Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee and the Education and Transportation committees during the legislative session.

“Serving the people of District 23 has been a tremendous privilege, honor, and responsibility,” he wrote in the email. “I wish District 23 and the State of North Dakota continued growth and success in the future.”

The District 23 NDGOP executive committee must meet within 21 days of the being notified of the resignation to appoint a replacement to fill the remainder of Dyk’s four-year term, according to state statute . If the district’s executive committee fails to appoint a replacement within 21 days of being notified, the chair of the Legislative Management Committee, House Majority Leader Rep. Mike Lefor, “shall appoint a resident of the district to fill the vacancy.”

Dyk was the primary bill sponsor for one bill that passed in the 2023 session, House Bill 1522 , an anti-transgender pronoun and bathroom bill that was signed into law last May.

Last year, Dyk claimed a transgender student was beaten up by the Williston football team for using the girls restroom, an incident the school officials said was false, The Forum reported . Dyk refused to apologize and retract the statement, according to The Forum.

Holand Neubauer, chair of the NDGOP District 23, did not return a call or text seeking comment Wednesday afternoon.
