Horses could be star attractions of I-75/49th Street development
The massive mixed-use development proposed for the northwest quadrant of the future Interstate 75/Northwest 49th Street interchange likely will include an attraction featuring live horses. That information came Oct. 20 during a Marion County Commission hearing. Here's what we know: Horses on display near I-75? Yes. The property owner/developer, William "Bill" Kearns, told the commission that visitors likely will want to see, pet and interact with horses when they come through the "Horse Capital of the World." His development will include residential and commercial uses and likely a hotel and restaurants. Why not a barn/attraction with horses? He will donate the land himself. Details still to come on who would run the equine operation and what it might look like. Kearns further suggested that the county's tourism office relocate from downtown Ocala to his new development, which is seen as a gateway to Marion's horse country and the World Equestrian Center. "Nobody knows where it (the existing tourism office) is," Kearns said. People, himself included, have driven past many beautiful Marion horse farms, but never actually gone in. Kearns suggests bus tours so people can get behind the gates. "People want to do that," he said. What else is planned
