Norwin notebook: Baseball, softball players earn all-section honors
The Big 5/6 Conference, which covers the top two classifications in WPIAL sports, released its all-section softball and baseball teams. Westmoreland County first-team picks from the lone Class 6A section included Norwin senior shortstop Bailey Snowberger and senior utilty player Brooklyn Kotch and Hempfield sophomore third baseman Lauren Howard, senior outfielder Maggie Howard and junior shortstop Allie Cervola.
Hempfield Area School Board approves district's next superintendent
Incoming Hempfield Area School District Superintendent Mark Holtzman is keenly aware of the stalled high school renovation project. “The large construction project that’s been kind of looming over the last couple of years really needs to take shape,” he said. “I think kind of orchestrating and getting those things tied together, and starting to understand what the project looks like, and what is holding up the project, (is a priority).”
Greene Grabs Modified Victory At Penn Can
SUSQUEHANNA, PA – Penn Can speedway celebrated the life of Bob Wildoner on a gorgeous Friday night. Alex Stanton redrew the pole with Tyler Yeagle to his outside. Yeagle would lead the opening circuit and hold off Stanton through a rough start with four cautions coming in the first four laps. Stanton would take the lead down the back stretch on lap 5, but couldn’t hold the spot at the line. Darwin Greene saw his chance to capitalize, going two for one through the middle of turn 2, clearing Yeagle and rocketing away down the backstretch with the lead.
Thomas Jefferson senior makes impact in diving, gymnastics
Addison Arndt, a two-sport standout at Thomas Jefferson, is attending Penn State in the fall. She will take a 3.9 GPA with her to the University Park campus. “I am committed to Penn State,” Arndt said. “I am going in as an undecided major, but I am very interested in kinesiology and psychology. I am planning on doing something along those lines, but I have an open mind about a lot of different professions, so I think the best option for me as of right now is going in undecided.”
Fayette County paramedic attacked
A Fayette County EMS worker was attacked while rending aid at a Dollar General on May 4. According to the Pennsylvania State Police, PSP Uniontown responded to National Pike for a report of an unresponsive male at the location. When troopers arrived on scene all parties involved were spoken to on scene. The investigation determined that a man passed out in the break room of the Dollar General while under the influence of a controlled substance. That man then physically assaulted a paramedic from Fayette County who was called to render aid.
