KDOT has been looking at ways to improve the 22-mile stretch of four-lane highway between the towns. The K-254 Corridor Management Plan also includes the land within one mile of the highway.
Officials say the goal is to anticipate future land development along the corridor, provide access that serves the communities, and keep traffic moving efficiently and safely.
KDOT held public meetings about potential changes last June and November . Residents complained about the crashes along the corridor.
KDOT says it took input from the first two public meetings, data analyses, and new findings to develop a plan for the corridor, including proposed intersection changes.
It plans to exhibit the preferred alternative and recommendations during a third public meeting this month. It will be on Wednesday, May 22, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the commons area of Circle Middle School, 14697 SW 20th Street , Benton. A formal presentation will begin at 5:45 p.m..
City and county government leaders, agencies, property owners, and others using K-254 are invited to the meeting.
The public will be able to review, comment and ask questions about the proposed changes. KDOT says it will take the input to help develop a final recommendation for the corridor.
Anyone who requires language translation or interpretation, special assistance, or accommodations to attend the meeting should contact Tim Potter, KDOT Public Information Officer, at 620-727-2278 or tim.potter@ks.gov five days before the public meeting date.
