WICHITA FALLS ( KFDX/KJTL ) — Summer is right around the corner, and with the school year ending, that also means camps for the kids.

Camp Fire is gearing up for another summer of educational fun in the sun.

According to Community and Program Director Mark Foreman, the main goal of camp is to provide a space where kids can get out and form genuine, in-person connections.

“Kids now are on screens all the time. I think that one of the biggest appeals of Camp Fire is that we get away from those screens and get that one-on-one human interaction and get to make friends and get to make bracelets and get to do all the fun stuff that is camp,” Foreman said.

Not only that, but Foreman said he enjoys the opportunity to create lifelong memories for campers.

“You talk to so many people about camp, and it’s like, ‘Oh, I remember when I was 6, 7 years old and I went out there and I talked to this person, and I made this one craft or I learned how to throw a football,” Foreman said. “That’s something that you can’t really get in a lot of places now, and it’s really special to still be able to offer that.”

Also included in the registration are swim lessons every morning, plus an hour-long free swim session in the afternoon.

“So, we’ll teach the kids how to swim, proper water safety, how to be around others in the water. It’s really special to see these kids come in on the first day of camp, and they don’t know how to swim, they’re scared of the water and everything like that,” Foreman said. “And by the last day, they’ve passed the deep water test… Passing the deep water test is kind of a rite of passage.”

Campers can look forward to being taught by specialists for arts and crafts, sports and nature, and middle school-aged kids can also look forward to learning about survival tips this year.

Registration for Day Camp 2024 is now open. Each session is one week long and will last from June 10 through June 28 for $150 and a one-time $15 registration fee.

WFPD officers will also provide security each day.
