Several guest speakers, including the warden of Allred, Kevin Smith, took the stage to remember the men and women who lost their life in the line of duty serving as a corrections officers throughout the nation in 2023.

The “missing officer table” was also presented which honors those who are no longer alive followed by the playing of Taps.

“It definitely shows that we’re a family, especially here at the James V. Allred Unit. We believe in looking out for one another; not just here, but statewide, in all of our facilities,” Smith said. “We’re a family agency, and that’s just what the Texas Department of Criminal Justice does.”

A riderless horse was also at the ceremony with a pair of backwards facing boots in its stirrup, which represents a fallen warrior or a leader who will no longer lead.
