WICHITA FALLS ( KFDX/KJTL ) — The Quail Creek drainage project between Maplewood Avenue and Midwestern Parkway is almost ready to enter its next phase.

Since early 2023, the city has been working on removing the private dam in Quail Creek between Midwestern Parkway and Maplewood Ave.

The city removed the dam citing increased flood risk. Now that the dam is removed, the project can move into its next steps, according to assistant city engineer Shanice Robinson.

“The ultimate plan is for all phases of this project to have a concrete bottom. Some portions will have vertical concrete walls or sloped concrete walls,” Robinson said. “That main Quail Creek section by that dam will have these block retaining walls on the sides.”

Before, the dam would hold water back and could have potentially caused flooding of the residences and businesses that line the creek. The dam’s removal and the upcoming changes to the drainage channel should minimize those risks.

“The dam was literally an obstruction in getting water to flow through. So now the dam isn’t there anymore, water can more easily flow downstream, reducing that flooding risk,” Robinson said.

The project’s expected completion date is in 2025.
