Elkin school board to sign contract with new superintendent Nov. 16
A new superintendent for Elkin City Schools is expected to be in place for the start of the new year. The board has been working since the summer to recruit and hire a replacement for Dr. Steve Hall, who left the position in June. The school board hired North Carolina School Board Association consultant Sam Thorp to aid with the search and hiring process. On Monday, Nov. 16 the board will hold a Special Called Meeting in the media center at Elkin High School beginning at 6:30 p.m. A closed session will be held first, at 6 p.m. for the board to finalize discussions. In open session the board will officially vote on the new hire and sign the contract ahead of announcing the new leader and a welcome reception. The name of the new superintendent will not released until the contract is signed at the Nov. 16 meeting. The new superintendent is expected to begin on Jan. 1, 2027.

Veterans Day in city to honor patriotism
One good thing about Veterans Day activities in Mount Airy next Wednesday is that unlike previous years, no rain or cold temperatures are in the forecast — with perfect conditions for honoring military members in store instead. “It’s for them,” said Mark Barr, who has been organizing Mount Airy’s annual Veterans Day program since 2013. It will be held Wednesday at Blackmon Amphitheatre near City Hall, with both veterans and the public urged to attend. The service is scheduled for 11 a.m., which commemorates the signing of the Armistice ending World War I in 1918 at that time on the 11th day of the 11th month. This will come after the Mount Airy Veterans Day Parade that will pull out at 9:30 a.m. from Veterans Memorial Park on West Lebanon Street en route to the downtown area. “It looks like it’s going to be a pretty good-sized parade this year,” Barr said of the procession that will feature entries by military organizations and Junior ROTC students from local high schools. Amphitheatre service The 11 a.m. program at Blackmon Amphitheatre will include Staff Sgt. Steven Munoz of the local recruitment unit of the U.S. Marine Corps as guest speaker. Veterans of

Faces of Elkin: Abby Walker
For Abby Walker, Elkin wasn’t always the place she imagined calling home. Today, she can’t imagine being anywhere else. Abby first came to Elkin from Florida with her family in the mid-1990s. They arrived in November to gray skies, bare trees and a town where they didn’t know anyone. But it didn’t take long for Elkin to begin feeling like home.
