GULF COUNTY, Fla. ( WMBB ) — Eastern Shipbuilding Group is not only an economic force in our community, it’s also a social force.

Eastern is hosting its 21st Annual Freshwater Classic Charity Fishing Tournament this Sunday.

Last year over 600 people participated in the tournament, which takes place on the Apalachicola River. Over the years this tournament has raised more than $150,000 for local charities.

The Gulf Coast Children’s Advocacy Center got $30,000 last year. They’re also this year’s beneficiary. Organizers are expecting a huge turnout this weekend.

“We make it a point not just to affect the community in a positive way economically, but we want to affect it in a positive way as a community partner,” Eastern Shipbuilding Group Chairman and CEO Joey D’Isernia said. “This is our home, this is where we were born and raised. We live here, we love the area and we’re proud of it so it’s important for us to give back.”

Tournament activities will take place at Gaskin Park in Wewahitchka. That’s where the official weigh-ins will take place Sunday afternoon between 1 and 2:30 central time. There will also be local food vendors and a 2000-gallon live fish display tank.
