In Wisconsin's Amish country, health care workers confront a measles surge

CASHTON - It was a busier-than-usual morning at Lisa Larson's mobile health care clinic, with five patients passing through the repurposed Winnebago motorhome parked at an Amish produce market. Taking a break between appointments to call a nurse colleague, she heard about a patient who'd developed a rash on her ears and along her hairline. "I wonder if she's positive," Larson said. She didn't need to specify with what. Larson and her colleagues care for patients from southwestern Wisconsin's Amish communities. Amid Wisconsin's worst measles outbreak in decades, which has blown past 400 cases , health officials had until recently been tight-lipped for privacy reasons about who is getting sick. The state health department acknowledged in a Nov. 3 memo that disease transmission is primarily in Amish and Mennonite communities. Larson and other health care workers with knowledge of the outbreak had known that for months.
