Police use spike strips to stop erratic U-Haul van on Route 10 in Westfield

EASTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – A man was arrested after a car chase from Easthampton to Westfield where police had to use spike strips.

According to Easthampton Deputy Chief of Police Dennis Scribner, officers received a call around 10:30 a.m. Friday for a U-Haul van driving erratically. The van was spotted on Union Street where a traffic detail officer attempted to stop the van to check on the driver but the van drove past the officer. Officers also failed to stop the driver on Payson Avenue.

The van was seen driving erratically through all of the encounters with police. As the driver continued down Route 10, Southampton Police used spike strips to deflate the van’s tires but it was still able to continue into Westfield.

The U-Haul was finally boxed in by cruisers in the Cumberland Farms parking lot in Westfield. The driver, a 50-year-old man, was arrested and taken to a hospital for evaluation. No one was injured.

22News received photos of the U-Haul in Westfield with all of the tires down to the rims. Several police cruisers were in the area.
