Public schools across the Five Boroughs cancelled all outdoor activities on June 7, and Mayor Eric Adams warned those with respiratory conditions and others vulnerable to the smoke — including children and seniors — to stay inside as air quality levels hovered into “unhealthy” levels.

N.J. man sentenced for embezzling more than $300K from hotel chain
A New Jersey man was sentenced this week for embezzling more than $300,000 from a his former employer, a national hotel chain, U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger said. Marco Alvarez, 47, of Bloomfield, was handed down a 15-month prison term after pleading guilty to a single count of wire fraud in April 2022. As part of his sentence, he will also be subject to three years of supervised release and is required to pay $317,582 in restitution, prosecutors said.

An out-of-control drunk driver was charged with manslaughter Tuesday after crashing his car and striking a car, killing two people in Queens, police said. Tamir Khan, 22, was driving a 2013 Audi A4 northbound on 117th Street in South Ozone Park Monday around 4:25 a.m. when he smashed into a Toyota Camry traveling westbound on 111th Avenue. NEW YORK CITY, NY – The New York City Police Department continues its ongoing investigation into a series of robberies within the 34th Precinct, with two arrests recently made and one individual still sought. The two arrested individuals are Osriel Lewis, 23, from the Bronx, NY, who was taken into custody on Tuesday, May 24, 2022, and Angel Pimentel, 29, also from the Bronx, arrested on Thursday, May 5, 2022. SUMMIT, NJ - The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has issued an 'Air Quality Action Day' for Union, Bergen, Passaic, Hudson and Essex counties until midnight EDT Wednesday night (June 7). Sensitive individuals including those with heart or lung disease, the elderly, and the young should limit strenuous activities and the amount of time active outdoors. Levels of fine particulates will rise into unhealthy for sensitive groups category statewide today and Wednesday and likely last into the evening hours both days due to wildfire smoke transport from eastern Canadian wildfires. For additional information, visit njaqinow.net. The City of Summit Police and Fire Departments are advising that the wildfires are causing a smoke odor and hazy conditions locally.
