Autopsy: Jail inmate died from fentanyl intoxication

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Tameka Nicole Luckett died April 8 inside the Tippecanoe County Jail from fentanyl intoxication and her death was ruled an accident, Tippecanoe County Coroner Carrie Costello said.

Luckett, 45, and a 32-year-old woman overdosed early April 7 inside her West Lafayette apartment in the 300 block of Brown Street. She and the other woman were rushed to the hospital, and both survived, police said.

About 10 hours later, police returned to Luckett's apartment, where a man was not breathing from a suspected overdose. A second man at the apartment began to show signs of drug intoxication while police were there. Both men were rushed to the hospital and survived. But since Luckett was at her apartment — released from the hospital — and there were drugs found, police arrested her.

She was jailed the afternoon of April 7 on drug charges and maintaining a common nuisance. She was found unresponsive in her jail cell about 2:10 a.m. on April 8, and she could not be revived.
