1 West Bridgewater employee made almost $200,000. Here's top 10 highest paid in 2023

WEST BRIDGEWATER — The town's director of public works topped this year's list of earners among public employees.

DPW Chief Christopher Iannitelli didn't make the top 10 list last year. His total pay of $199,295 for calendar year 2023 includes $76,285 in additional non-retirement pay. That category includes working details, longevity bonuses, education incentives and hazard pay.

The other new name in this year's top 10 is Fire Lt. Christopher Lynds, who earned $163,329. He worked almost $50,000 worth of overtime.

The retirement of Police Chief Victor Flaherty shook up the list slightly. Flaherty's pay slipped to No. 2 while his replacement, Timothy W. Nixon , moved up from lieutenant to lead the department. Nixon earned the 7th most of any West Bridgewater public employee.

Keeping their places in the top 10 were names you'd expect: the superintendent of schools, the town administrator, two police sergeants, a detective and one of Lynd's fellow fire lieutenants. Rank-and-file public safety employees who made the top 10 did so mostly by working serious overtime.

    Overtime champs

In 2023, 80 people earned at least some overtime. That's about 14% of the 591 people the town paid at least a dollar.

As in most municipalities, some employees earned half or more of their base salary in OT. For West Bridgewater this year, that included firefighters Jonathan Fongeallaz and Connor P. Duffy.

    Paycheck extras

Working for the government tends to pay less than similar jobs in the private sector . But public employees have ways to bulk up their pay envelopes. Perhaps the best known is when police officers work "details" such as directing traffic at construction sites. Other sources include longevity bonuses, education incentives and hazard pay.

Like some of its peers, West Bridgewater doesn't break down each of these additional pots of money. The town payroll has one column for "additional non-retirement" income. The category includes details, but we can't show you who made the most from details alone. Important note for West Bridgewater taxpayers: Many details are paid by the private companies who do the hiring. The cash appears in public payroll data, but taxpayers aren't footing many of those particular bills.

Here are the 10 West Bridgewater employees who made the most in "additional non-retirement" income.
